Chuggin Along

Once again, too much times has passed between blog posts.  I guess it's pretty much the norm now.  I know I don't have many readers, but I do know that some of you check frequently to see if I've sprung into action yet and created a new post.  To those of you, I apologize.  However, rest assured, I am always shooting (thanks to my 365 project) and those photos will eventually make their way here.  Today's lot is not extraordinary.  We've just been hangin' out, doin our thing.  But I do feel like they capture the essence of our family this summer.  Enjoy.

Frequently, I find myself in the evening having not shot a photo for my 365 project so I'll whip out my camera and shoot whatever's occurring right then.  These have become some of my favorite photographs.  I love these ones of Charlie and Taylor hamming it up for me at dinner time.

I shot my first series of soccer photos last week.  It was so much work, but so rewarding.  Here's a test shot in my living room to see if I really needed to steam my backdrop.  Yes, I did.

Another quick shot to fulfill my project, but I so love the light in this one. It was late in the evening so there wasn't much light coming in the window and the fall off was quick.

Just some of my girls dressed up as is often the case around here.

Taylor really wanted me to take some more silhouette photos of her, but our yard is not a good place for that.  Still, she provided some gorgeous lines for me.

Taylor's been sleeping on the couch a lot lately because a)her room is as hot as a burnt marshmallow b)her bed is totally uncomfortable, like a board and c)morgan is a chatterbox.

The kids went to Vacation Bible School last week.  They loved it.  This year they were not in the same group, but both were blessed with crew leaders that adored them.  I volunteered each night and so enjoyed watching them from afar and admiring their independence and confidence.

All week at vacation bible school, they collected money to buy mosquito nets for children in Africa.  I took this as a good time to sort the children's money in their banks.  I let them divide them into 'spend', 'save' and 'donate' categories.  Charlie asked what was worth the most and initially put mostly quarters in his spend bag and 8 pennies in his donate bag.  However, I explained the importance of buying these nets for the children and we both agreed he should put three more handfuls of coins into his donation.

My favorite part was taking them to the store to let them spend some of their money.  At first, I felt like I was indulging them too much (each child ended up with $20 to spend), but then I saw what an education they were receiving.  They were forced to decide how best to spend their money, on one big item or several smaller items.  Taylor learned the value of finding items on sale.  Charlie opted for the larger item (an angry birds game) but reserved one dollar to buy his little sister a book.  Both children learned that toys cost money and when people give them toys it's because they decided to spend some of their own money on something they thought would make them happy.  In the end, it was a very nice experience.

(I've been enjoying taking photos of the kids sleeping lately!)

The girls painted Morgan's nails for the first time this week.

My step-father's family visited with us, too.  We had such a nice and relaxed time visiting at my mom's house.

Also, Addison celebrated her first birthday this week.

We took advantage of everyone being together to snap some family photos.

(just a bad hair day)

I found myself here for the second time in two months.

My poor, sweet, thumb-sucking girl managed to infect her beloved thumb.

Since her pediatrician's office was closed, and her thumb  was almost twice its normal size, we headed to the ER where they drained it and dressed it.  She was not happy with us.

But managed to get sympathy from everyone at the store as we awaited her antibiotics.

She has since been managing with 9 fingers.  She still gets the bandage off almost every nap and night which is why we are heading back to the doctor tomorrow.

Well, that's it.  That was my choppy rendition of our last ten days.  The next week will be completely out of our norm, but you'll have to wait to read about that soon!

Fun at the Lake House

Mark and I decided to take the kids back to the lake house over the fourth of July.  Although it was somewhat spur of the moment, we were able to spend four nights away so it was quite the vacation!  I love vacation.  Even though the preparation and packing is so tedious, it is all made worth it once we've immersed ourselves in our adventure.  My favorite part about vacations is letting rules fly out the window.  Which is why i  loved Mark's idea to stop for ice cream at 9:30 pm on our first night.

And hey, if my child wants to top her ice cream with ketchup, more power to her! (She didn't actually get any out.)

We spent the first night at my dad's house who lives about midway between home and the lake house.  He received quite the education on electronics the next morning.

Then Charlie showed off his checkers skills while the girls played upstairs.

Mark and Granny spent time talking outside after our wonderful breakfast.

Then it was time to hit the road.  When we arrived at the lake house it was raining.  This lasted about 10 minutes and was the only precipitation we saw (not to mention the only rain the town had seen in months).

When we arrived, we set out busying ourselves with our goodies from home.

Then we set out on the pontoon boat for our first of many boating adventures.

The next day we took the kids to the sandy area two docks down from ours.

Burying each other's feet was the favored activity.

The kids were interested in the water but not quite ready to go in it yet.

Then we attemped another boating adventure. Unfortunately our trip was cut short.  Apparently the E on the fuel tank does not stand for 'enough'.  Luckily their daddy is strong and towed us back to our dock.

After some rest and some lunch (and a trip to the gas station) we tried it again.

Again, the kids were not ready to brave the water, but Mark sure was!

In fact, we parked our boat while Mark swam to a big rock and jumped off.  Our favorite antic of the trip was when Morgan said "you talkin' 'bout DaDa?"  Taylor and I both agreed it sounded just like she said that and it made us both laugh!

The next day I entertained the kids a bit with my guitar.

Then it was time to hit the beach again.

Followed by more down time indoors.

Finally after lunch the kids were ready to swim!  They had never really swam in deep water with life jackets before and once they figured it out, they loved it! (I stayed inside because Morgan was napping, but did manage to snap off two quick shots)

After dinner, we took the boat out again.  This was much better, because the sun was on it's way down and it felt very pleasant out.

It was also quite beautiful.

We drove right up to a nearby island and parked the boat yet again.  We had only planned on letting Mark and Taylor swim, but once her brother and sister saw her, they couldn't wait to join her.

We took off Morgan's clothes since she wasn't in a swimsuit.  I wish I could say she kept this close to her daddy the whole time, but she did not.  I also wish I could say I was a cool, relaxed mom, but I was not.

Meanwhile, Charlie enjoyed finding rocks and throwing them into the water.

When we returned home, we broke out the glow bracelets.  Morgan is a huge fan of these.

We turned out the lights and danced to Spearhead while playing a family game of life on the ipad.  (Yes, we are a multi-tasking family.)

On the last day, Mark took the kids fishing before breakfast.

Once they each caught a fish, they were done.  Hey, I guess they got what they came for and were ready to move on.

Meanwhile, Morgan resurrected the previous nights glow bracelet fun.

After a quick bath and a quick lunch, it was time to pack up the car.

I did manage to get everyone to pause for a family photo before hitting the road.

It was a very nice trip, and we are so glad we made it happen.  The timing was not the most convenient for Mark or me, but sometimes you need to just set your priorities and go after them.  And this week it was about creating childhood memories.  Mission successful!
